Blue Genes

Blue Genes are a unique family band from North Wales whose sound reflects their Tennessean tastes and Celtic roots.

The trio consists of Mother (Kay), Father (Stephen) and their 14 year old daughter Megan.

Although Blue Genes are relatively new to the UK Country and Americana Scene the band’s two more senior members are seasoned professionals with a long history in the music industry.

Kay and Stephen, now in their thirties, have performed as duo Calon since the mid-90s, touching on all genres of music including country. Kay’s roots lie firmly in country music and Stephen, the former blues man, has been happy to indulge her passion, growing to love the genre equally.

When their daughter Megan was born in 2003 the couple raised her very close to the stage and it soon became apparent that she shared not only their musical ability but their love of music. The former blues guitarist didn’t stand a chance of influencing their daughter’s musical tastes as the sounds of Dixie Chicks, Faith Hill, Carrie Underwood, Little Big Town and Lady Antebellum filled their home. Now at the tender age of 14, Megan is an accomplished musician and singer songwriter who plays guitar, ukulele and mandolin. Megan’s passion for country music is unrivaled and, with this in mind, the family decided to form Blue Genes.”

The last two years have been a rollercoaster ride for Blue Genes including performing at some of the UK’s most prestigious country festivals, meeting the producer of their debut EP, releasing their first single, releasing their debut EP “Small Town Rumours” and seeing it soar in the country charts, supporting international artists, writing for other artists, hearing their tracks on country radio and being a nominated finalist at The UK Country Music Awards.

The group’s most recent achievement was writing, recording and producing their second EP ‘Named & Shamed’.

The EP was released at the end of March 2018 and went to the number one slot of the iTunes Country album chart. As the band have found their own identity over the last few years and have a more firm view on their sound the new EP is a self produced project. Blue Genes have formed a strong bond with the producer of their debut EP Justin Johnson over the last few years so it felt fitting to ask him to provide drums & percussion for the new record. The record features Megan and Kay on lead vocals and Stephen providing the third harmony and guitars. All six tracks are self penned by the trio and show real variety, from honky tonk to acoustic ballads. The EP was given its title to reflect the theme of truth, telling about real life events and real people. Also as the band share the same surname, this may bring some occasional shame to the 14 year old performing with her parents!

Blue Genes are passionate about the American and UK country music scenes and hope to bring a unique blend of contemporary country covers and self-penned material to audiences nationwide. The band’s diverse talents allow them to perform a huge range of songs from acoustic ballads to country rock and Americana. What appears to appeal to audiences is their tight three-part harmonies, strong musicianship and family chemistry. Blue Genes bring an authentic country style to a contemporary market.
