What would you do if Johnny Cash himself asked you to join him on stage? For Anthony O’Neill, there was no real decision to be made. Of course, at the time he didn’t realise just how big a deal that was, but he was emboldened by Johnny’s opening words to the band: “Ah’m so honoured you boys are doing my music”.
Many years, recordings and bands later, Anthony is now doing his own take on country music, alongside his fluid cast of musicians, The Murder. But the influence of Johnny and his ilk isn’t hard to detect; while this is unmistakeably the darker side of country, there’s some dry wit and gallows humour to be found.
Clearly, it resonates with listeners: the group earned nominations in two categories in the 2024 UK Country Music Awards – UK Country Artist of the Year and UK Country Group of the Year.
Not one to rest on his laurels, Anthony followed up his debut EP All That’s Left to Rust with a double A-side comprised of The L&N Don’t Stop Here and Muddy Waters before changing gears entirely with an upbeat and uplifting Christmas single Waterloo Sunset (Christmas Morning).
In the spring of 2025, Anthony O’Neill and the Murder released the single The Endless Plain of Fortune.
The song tells of the South Africa gold rush of the early 1900s, in the time between the collapse of the empire and the Great War. People from every walk of life sought their fortune and, when the gold and gems ran dry, so did the dreams.
Anthony said: “While recording the album, we pretty much banged this out during a break. Some orchestral musicians from the opposite studio stuck their heads around the door and offered their services, so I sat down and scored out parts for cello, trumpet and timpani, and voilà – a new track in the can.”
In June 2025, Anthony O’Neill and the Murder released the single Swan Song (Le Chant des Cygnes), marking a historic moment as the first English-language adaptation of a song by legendary French band Indochine. The track serves as the lead single from the group’s forthcoming album There’s Been a Murder!, scheduled for release in October 2025 on vinyl and CD.
The inspiration to reinterpret the iconic song struck after frontman Anthony O’Neill encountered the original in late 2024. A chance meeting with Indochine members Nicola Sirkis and Ludwig Dahlberg following a secret performance in London led to the band’s approval of the project.
“I chatted to Nicola and Ludwig after their gig,” Anthony said. “They were enthusiastic about the idea. Indochine are monumental in France but remain under the radar here in the UK. We don’t know if this cover by a country and western act will change that, but it’s one of their finest songs and recording it was a blast.”
In tribute to Indochine’s visually rich aesthetic, Swan Song (Le Chant des Cygnes) was accompanied by a stylized anime-inspired music video.
“This was a creative first for us,” Anthony added. “The video is a nod to Indochine’s visual artistry. We felt it was important to reflect that in our own way.”
In September 2025, Anthony released the single Your Big Day – a story of love, deceit and infidelity, and what happens when a relationship built on lies falls apart at the altar. But who’s the protagonist and who’s the antagonist – and who is the mysterious third person in this wedding gone wrong?
The long-awaited new album from Anthony O’Neill and the Murder will be released on Monday 1st December, 2025.
Comprising of 11 tracks, A Season in Hell was recorded over the course of 2025 in London, Paris and Texas – where it was also mixed and mastered. Once again, Anthony sings and plays most of the instruments, ranging from guitar and bass to banjo, theremin and mellotron, with other parts being provided by The Murder – as well as a few special guests.
A Season in Hell was produced by Anthony O’Neill, and will be released on vinyl and CD on December 1st 2025, with four bonus tracks on the CD, and to streaming services early in 2026.
A Dolby Atmos 5.1 surround sound mix, also produced by Anthony O’Neill, will follow later in 2026.
