John Stamp is a songwriter and guitarist born in Cheshire and now living in Derbyshire.
Having trained as a music and arts therapist back in their mid 90’s, John worked as a Children’s Residential Care practitioner, eventually owning a national UK care company. Throughout his time in social work and in his late teens /early 20’s John had always been a musician and songwriter.
In 2012 he worked on some tracks with Boo Hewerdine and released a four track EP, Misnomer. Then all went quiet again for a few years until in 2017 his friend and producer John Hartley invited him to Nashville to work with players of Emmylou Harris’s band.
The guitar work of Will Kimbrough and the beautiful vocals of Leigh Nash (Sixpence None The Richer) grace the album Franklin 54. It’s a collection of songs that aim to lyrically and musically build a zip wire across the Atlantic.
Chunks of the record are country-tinged Americana, with nods to more soulful and west coast leanings. The album was well received, had good reviews in various parts of the UK and US.
John sold his business in 2019, travelled a little and hunkered down with the rest of planet for the Covid 2020 sessions!! During this time he wrote a children’s book for his grandson, and recorded the single All These Things which was used as the showreel for British filmmakers Corestar Media.
In early 2023 the EP Songs For The Curious was released, from which the track Clocks sits as the single.
John is back from spending a few months with his son and family in New Zealand. During his time just south of Auckland John has been working on something very very different. His lifelong friend actor Russ Boulter (The Bill, Darling Buds of May, many Shakespeare plays and lots of voice over credits for Blue Planet, Frozen Planet etc) is working with John to create soundscapes of mindful, spiritual, sonnets, poetry.
Mixing the voice work of Russ with the layered cinematic themes of Johns instrumental compositions. It’s a work in progress and who knows where it’ll take us.
