Hugh Reed

Hugh Reed started out as a singer with a comedy rock band Hugh Reed and the Velvet Underpants. More recently he has been releasing country and folk solo songs. He has toured with Simple Minds, Deborah Harry and the Alabama 3 among many others. 

Hugh describes himself as “multi talentless” and is seen in a cameo role in Transpotting – the coolest film of the 90s. More recently he played a butler in the Jackie Chan movie 12 Zodiacs and has also appeared many times on Chinese TV in many acting roles during his time living in Beijing. He has also appeared in the TV drama Taggart. 

Hugh has played summer festivals including ButeFest and Doune the Rabbit Hole. He is signed to the Last Night from Glasgow label and is due to release a new album in early 2026. 

Following local TV appearances his band The Velvet Underpants were invited by Deborah Harry of the band Blondie to support her on 11 dates throughout Britain. This culminated in Hugh and Debs doing a live duet of Waiting for the Man.

Hugh’s debut album Take a Walk on the Clydeside received a lot of radio play in the UK and throughout, Europe, America and Canada.

Hugh has toured extensively throughout the UK, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Denmark and Ireland. He returned to Scotland in 2020 after recording his album Ni fa feng le ma? (R U Crazy? in Chinese).
