Cherokee Redmex, a north London band that takes its influences from 1970s Americana and reinterprets it in many styles from acid rock to folk and country. The band has received much airplay across the globe including BBC Radio London.
In early 2023, Cherokee Redmex released the self-penned single “Indian Girl”, based on a true story and transcribed from actual overheard conversations about a young man (Michael’s) intentions to marry someone deemed by some, to be unsuitable. The girl in question is from overseas and becomes the subject of local gossip and speculation.
The song paints a picture of Middle England in the 1950’s and the attitude towards the social upheavals of the time, namely the stereotypical attitudes to newcomers and fear of change and that somehow, Michael could have done much better for himself by marrying a local girl.
The style of the the song is very much in the storytelling tradition that is a big part of the repertoire of Cherokee Redmex. Shades of West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet but without the violence and, as it turns out, a happy ending. The song, aired exlusively on UKCountryRadio.com.
