Review: Jerry Kilgore - September 2017
Walesby Sports & Social Club, Nottinghamshire, 26th September

Review by Nutty Norah

Jerry Kilgore was in the UK for a short tour, arranged by Nicky James, from September 22nd to 28th, playing Pentney Bowls Club Norfolk, Whitby Club Ellesmere Port, Fred's Place Mapperley, Ireland, McGorys Donegal, Eildon Centre Coldstream and Butlins Skegness.  However McGory's was flooded out so the ever resourceful Nicky James, with the help of Jonny & Lynnette, hastily put together a show at the Walesby Sports and Social Club near Nottingham.  This was all done within 36 hours and advertised on the internet, which is where I saw it and took the opportunity to go down there to see the show.

Nicky James and The State of the Heart Band opened the show with some up tempo Buck Owens songs and Nicky was also juggling the sound at the same time, all this on about two hours sleep in 36 hours!  The State of The Heart Band provided backing throughout the show, a very hard working band including Jon J. Paul and Keyboards and accordion, Danny Wright on drums, Adrian Fountain on bass guitar and harmony vocals, and the amazing Derek Thurlby on lead guitar and steel guitar.

Jonny and Lynnette were on next with a good selection of songs from their repertoire.  Apart from organising the show with Nicky, Jonny also did the compere work and Lynnette took the money on the door!  Following Jonny and Lynnette was the inevitable raffle - I won a Jerry Kilgore CD!

After the break Jerry came on stage, singing some of his own songs and a few covers, including the line dance favourite "I Just Want My Baby Back", but no line dancers or dodgy check shirts here!  Jerry also sang a couple of songs that he has not yet recorded, telling the story of how he met his heroes Johnny Cash and Buck Owens. The audience demanded two encores and were not disappointed.

Although this was a hastily arranged date a good number of people turned up to enjoy the show, which was a very relaxed and friendly affair.  Jerry Kilgore made a point of speaking to everyone who wanted to speak to him after the show, as did the rest of the artistes.  An excellent night out for a tenner!  Thanks again to Nicky James and Jonny & Lynnette for putting the show on at such short notice.
