• Longstay
  • LONGSTAY are a young band playing a lively mix of country rock and Americana music, based out of their home city of Perth. Originally formed as a trio in 2014, they quickly became regulars on the local music scene, and have grown to a 5 piece full country sound with the addition of drums, bass and piano. Despite having this 4 year pedigree on the live circuit, the average age of the band is still only 17!

Malcolm Swan and Callum Campbell, who front the band, have been playing music together for four years, and this shines through in their live performances where their interaction and ease is evident on stage. Their musical influences range from Creedence Clearwater through Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson, right up to current day artists such as Jason Isbell and Chris Stapleton. This heady mix is apparent in their own songs which form the core of their debut album.

Perth is the heart of country music in Scotland, due in the main to the efforts of John and Barclay Thompson of Gold Rush Records who, forty years ago, started bringing Americana acts like Townes Van Zandt, Mickey Newbury & Steve Young over to play in local venues. The influence this had on the young musicians of the time perpetuated the interest in the genre and led to the thriving scene that exists in Perth with bands like Red Pine Timber Company and The New Madrids currently flying the flag for country music, and festivals like Southern Fried going from strength to strength.

The debut album from the boys draws on the past and brings all these threads together - their love for the music, their experiences playing the outdoor stage at Southern Fried three years in a row, and supporting Red Pine at various gigs - but it also reflects their heritage in a much deeper way. One of the tracks they cover on the album is an old Southpaw tune - those stalwarts of Perth Americana from the late 2000s. The album is being produced by Gav Munro, who remembers going to those early Townes Van Zandt gigs - and to complete the circle, the album is released on none other than the Thompson’s original Gold Rush Records label.
